Narrative Self Portrait
Title: Cyborg
Size: 18” x 24”
Medium: Oil pastels on a Masonite board
My piece Cyborg, symbolizes the state of my identity at the moment. In the piece I am being merged with my phone and I am taking a picture of myself with my makeup on. I used my favourite artistic style, spontaneous realism to depict myself, it works best especially in relation to my personality, because if there is one thing I know about myself for sure, it is that I love colour and I am a colourful person. I have many different interests, I am a writer, an artist and I also enjoy doing makeup. At first I would document my makeup looks for fun, but as time went on I became more obsessed with the quality and making everything perfect. Sometimes I become so obsessed with my work I often forget to add emotion or feeling to it. With every attempt to be perfect in my craft, it feels as though a little bit of my soul is taken away. Lately I have been struggling with not knowing my real personality, I feel that through all the glam and the perfectionist strides, I have forgotten. But mostly I feel like a cyborg, one with my camera and soulless.
